I've heard about this before - maybe even from NPR. I think they do it here in New York as well... I'm hoping to randomly come across it.
Yesterday I randomly came across a historic subway ride. I went to take the V train with some friends and subway cars from the 1930's rolled into the station. complete with shouting conductors in period suits, flickering incandescent light bulbs and the smell do diesel wafting across the platform.
Hundreds of santas? I can't wait.
